Chapter 8

Kyra took a swig of her flask and quickly shoved it into her apron before Adelina returned to the front of the café.

            “Everything okay?”

Kyra jumped. She turned to see Raven wiping down the table next to her. “You scared me.”

“I didn’t mean to scare you, but that was the second time you drank from your flask in two hours. I’m concerned.”

Kyra waved off Raven’s worry. “I’m fine.”

Raven huffed and folded her arms over her chest. “How full is the flask?”

Kyra blinked several times not understanding Raven’s question.

“How full is the flask?” Raven repeated.

Kyra shrugged. “It’s half-full.”

Raven tsked. “Okay. Then how many times have you refilled it today alone?”

Kyra shrank under Raven’s scrutiny. “Twice,” she mumbled under breath hoping Raven didn’t hear her.

            “Twice!”

Kyra held her finger up to her lips trying to quiet Raven. “Shush. Adelina might hear you.”

Raven sighed heavily. “K, you promised me you’d…”

“I’m okay,” Kyra growled losing patience. “I’m going home. I don’t feel well.” Kyra walked off to tell Adelina that she needed to go home.

On the walk home, Kyra took several swigs from her flask. Ghosts filled the streets greeting one another before following golden flower petal trails to homes. November and December were the worst months for Kyra. November was the beginning because of the holiday, Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead. In many cultures, it was the day that the dead returned to spend time with their families. Kyra pivoted to avoid walking into a dancing ghost. She hastened her stride to get home. The voices of the ghosts filled Kyra’s head. Then music from ghost musicians and their instruments played in the air infiltrated Kyra’s ears. She wanted to scream and break out crying, but she had to keep up the pretense that she couldn’t see or hear ghosts. She hurried home.

Once home she took a deep breath to calm her nerves. Her shot nerves settled at the thought of being alone.

            “Are you okay?”

Fuck! She forgot about Rae. Kyra slumped to the floor in front of the door and broke down crying. This is hell! Not only do I have to deal with ghosts for the next two months but I also have to live with one! Kyra whipped out her flask and chugged the remaining alcohol.
