Chapter 21

Rae ground his teeth together. His hands rested on his lap, but with every word Lilah whined, his fingernails dug into his black ripped jeans until they reached the palms.

            “Lilah…you knew from the beginning that I wasn’t looking for anything serious.”

Tears brimmed the corner of Lilah’s eyes. “I can’t have casual sex with you, Rae. I’ve fallen in love with you.”

Rae’s expression twisted to form one of disgust and anger. “Then our casual sex relationship is over,” Rae lashed.

Tears leaked from Lilah’s eyes at the harshness of Rae’s words. “Can you honestly say you don’t love me?”

            “I loved the sex.”

Lilah spun on her heels and dashed out of Rae’s apartment, screaming that he was an asshole. Ghost Rae shook his head at his past self’s behavior. “You could have handled that better, jackass.”

Ghost Rae followed Lilah out into the hallway, where he saw her hugging Chaz. Even as a ghost, his skin would crawl every time he saw Chaz.

            “What’s wrong?” Chaz asked as he stroked the back of Lilah’s head.

Lilah cried into Chaz’s chest. “Rae and I broke up.”

Chaz’s hand froze at Lilah’s statement. “Oh?”

Lilah wiped her tears on Chaz’s shirt. “I told Rae I loved him…but he rejected me.”

In a heartbeat, Chaz smashed his lips against Lilah’s in a kiss. Lilah, taken aback by the sudden kiss froze. Chaz seemed to sense that Lilah wasn’t kissing him back and pulled his face away from hers.

            “Lilah, I love you. I loved you since I met you,” Chaz confessed.

Lilah’s eyes bulged out of her head. Chaz continued his confession.

            “When I saw you with Rae…I knew he wasn’t the right guy for you. I could treat you better than he would. All I need is for you to give me a chance.”

Lilah took several steps away from Chaz. His hands, however, still clung to her waist. Chaz attempted to pull her flush against him. Lilah stood her ground.

            “I’m sorry Chaz,” she murmured.

Chaz tightened his hold on her. Lilah squirmed and pushed her hands against his chest.

            “My heart belongs to Rae. Even though he rejected me…I’ll wait for him. I’ll always wait for him.”

Chaz finally released his hold on Lilah. Before Chaz could grab her again, Lilah bolted and disappeared from view.            

“Fucking Rae…”
