Althea flipped through the mail that she brought inside. One letter caught her attention. It was addressed from the Mayfield Hospital. She dropped the remaining letters onto the table and grabbed a butter knife. She slipped the blunt edge of the butter knife along the top of the letter and ripped it along the fold. Once it was opened, she pulled out a small note.
“Hospital mail is for emergency and hospital business. NOT for personal use. -Nurse Vera”
Althea let out a sigh and placed the note on the table before she pulled out the piece of mail that made Nurse Vera mad. It was another postcard. The picture this time was a sunset over snow-covered mountains. In black block letters, it said ‘Spokane’. Althea’s heart launched into her throat; sick realization settled into her stomach as she turned the postcard over.
“Almost home. Do you miss me yet? I believe I ran into your father, Hilo Hoomake. I followed him and sat in on one of his lessons on Greek Mythology at Gonzaga University. He would make a lovely addition to my collection of bodies. – Requiem”
Althea stilled as she reread the postcard. A range of emotions filled her. The first she felt was happiness and hope. She was happy to know that her father was alive. Next was anger, her father had abandoned her when she was eight years old and he only moved one state away. Why did he never call or stop by to check on her? The final emotion was fear. Requiem had threatened her father’s life and hinted that an inordinate number of bodies followed in his wake since she brought him back from the dead. Bile trudged up her throat and burned her esophagus. Hastily Althea dropped the card onto the kitchen table and ran to the sink to release the contents lodged in her throat.
“Everything okay?” Nekros asked as he walked into the kitchen.
Althea held the kitchen counter until her knuckles turned white and shook involuntarily. Nekros’s hand stroked her back in an attempt to calm her down. He asked his question again. This time Althea gestured to the table pointing to the latest postcard. Nekros turned his head to see what had caused Althea to become sick.
“Nekros…can you call Raven for me? Tell her I need her here.”
