Chapter 17

Kyra and Rae sat on the couch and watched a movie. The relaxed moment was interrupted by a knock on the door.

“Are you expecting anyone?” Rae asked.

Kyra shook her head no. She clambered off the couch and tiptoed to the door. She peeked through the peephole and sighed heavily at the sight of Chaz. She cracked the door open enough to show half her face. “What do you want?”

“I just want to talk. Please.” Chaz pleaded

Kyra let out another sigh as she opened the door and allowed Chaz to enter her home. Once he crossed the threshold Kyra closed the door. She quickly spun on her heels and faced him. “What do you want to talk about?”

Rae glared daggers at Chaz from the couch. Despite feeling the same way about Chaz, Kyra remained polite. Chaz glanced around the apartment before he answered Kyra. “I wanted to talk about us.”

“You guys were never together moron!”

“There never was an us,” Kyra responded.

A small flicker of annoyance flashed in Chaz’s eyes. It only lasted a moment. “How can you say that,” Chaz mocked hurtfully. “How can two people be intimate and not be a couple?”

Kyra rolled her eyes. “Like I said it was a mistake. Both times.”

Before Kyra could react, Chaz pinned her against the front door of her apartment. One hand wrapped around her throat. His grip was tight, but only to intimidate her. His face contorted in such a way that he appeared demonic.

“Having sex with me is anything but a mistake,” he growled.

In the corner of Kyra’s eyes, she watched Rae blink from the couch to the center of the living room. As much as she wanted Rae to rescue her, it was impossible with Rae being a ghost. She noticed that his hands formed into fists at his sides.

“It was a mistake. And no amount of gaslighting will change my mind,” Kyra grumbled.

The grip on her throat tightened enough to leave bruises and partially cut off Kyra’s airway.

“By having sex with me, you agreed to be mine. By letting me touch and see every inch of you,” Chaz said huskily.

Kyra squirmed at both his hold on her throat and the depraved look in his eyes as he admired her attire, a tank and shorts pajama set. Chaz moved the hand that was pressed against the door and snaked it under the hem of her shorts caressing her upper thigh. His breath came in ragged as goosebumps formed on Kyra’s skin.

“You are mine. Everything about you is mine.”

Tears formed in Kyra’s eyes and she used every ounce of her strength and tried to push Chaz off of her, but to no avail.

“Get your fucking hands off of her!” Rae yelled.

Rae’s anger shook the apartment and caused the lights to flicker. Chaz paused in his movements to take in the surroundings. It only lasted a moment before his eyes were back on Kyra. “Feels like an earthquake. Never had sex in one before, so you’ll be the first.” The hand under her shorts pushed up and grazed the lace panties.

“No!” Kyra whimpered. The hand on her throat tightened more, cutting off more of her air supply.

“I said don’t fucking touch her!” Rae screamed.

The room continued to shake and the lights flickered. In the kitchen, the knife holder rattled until it fell over. The knives it held, sprawled on the counter. The song “Poltergeist” by Corpse Husband blared through the surround system.

“Weird song to fuck to, but I’m into it if you are.”

That was the last straw. The knives sailed from the kitchen to where Chaz pinned Kyra. Each knife grazed Chaz’s skin, from his cheek to his fingers, and outlined his form, but none hurt Kyra. The predator and the prey stood paralyzed.

Kyra regained her mobility first and used this moment to kick Chaz in the balls. This caused him to back up and cup his potentially damaged groin. Kyra pulled one of the knives out of the door and held it to Chaz’s face. His eyes narrowed, but Kyra never faltered.

            “Leave.”

Rae, still fueled by anger, used his new ability and swung the front door open. Chaz waddled his way past Kyra, still holding the knife.

As Chaz crossed the threshold, he sneered, “You’re like Lilah. A bitch.”

Kyra kicked Chaz out of the door and slammed it in his face. She locked both the normal lock and the deadbolt before she rounded to find Rae.

Rae’s eyes widened and shook violently.

            “Rae, what’s wrong?”

Rae stared at his hands still quivering. The name ‘Lilah’ rang loudly in his ears like church bells.

            “Lilah?”

As the word left his lips, Rae disappeared.
