Chapter 13
Kyra finished wrapping all her Christmas presents. A triumphant smile plastered on her face. Her smile was contagious because Rae, who sat near the Christmas tree, smiled back at her. Kyra’s phone pinged and at the same time, her doorbell rang. Rae leaned over to peer at her phone while she made her way to the front door.
“You got a text from Raven asking if you still want to celebrate Christmas at her place,” Rae called.
She opened the door to see Chaz. Her smile faded quickly.
“Hey baby,” Chaz purred. He leaned in to kiss Kyra, but she turned her face away from him. Chaz brushed it off. “I thought since we’re dating now, we could spend Christmas together.”
“Chaz…we’re not dating,” Kyra mumbled.
Chaz furrowed his brow. “What? But we had sex. Twice.”
Kyra squirmed nervous. “That was a mistake.”
Chaz reached for her, but Kyra dodged his hold.
“I can’t do this now. Sorry.” Kyra closed the door on Chaz’s face.
Kyra laid her head against the door. She waited, holding her breath. From the other side of the door, she heard Chaz grumble and kick the wall next to her door before he stormed off. She released her breath relieved that he was gone.
“Good riddance to bad rubbish!” Rae exclaimed cheerfully.
Kyra returned to where her phone was and texted Raven one word, yes.
Kyra finished her second glass of eggnog with brandy. Raven looked at her nervous. Althea and Nekros sat on the couch watching a Christmas movie. Raven and Kyra sat on the floor cross-legged in front of the couch.
“Are you okay?” Raven asked.
“I’m good!” Kyra slurred.
Raven patted her friend’s shoulder. “Hun, you’re not good. You’re on your third glass of eggnog.”
Kyra’s eyes started to water. Raven continued to pat and rub Kyra’s back.
“What’s wrong?” Raven pressed.
Kyra stared at the black rug beneath her. “I’ve been keeping a secret all of my life.”
Raven stroked Kyra’s back. “Hun, you can tell us your secret.”
Althea paused the movie and lightly touched Kyra’s shoulder. “We’re not going to share it with anyone.”
Tears spilled from Kyra’s eyes as the weight of her secret pressed on her shoulders like the weight of the world on Atlas’s. “I can see and hear ghosts,” she whimpered. “I’ve been pretending I don’t have this ability for years.”
Raven rubbed Kyra’s back. “Is that why the last two months of the year are hard for you?”
Kyra nodded weakly.
Raven shared a look with Nekros and Althea. The couple responded with a look of their own. Raven nodded as if given permission. Raven pulled her friend into a hug. “K, I have a secret or two, as well.”
“Like what?” Kyra sniffled.
“I can see ghosts too.”
Kyra stiffened and jerked away from the hug to stare into Raven’s eyes. “What?”
“I can see ghosts too,” Raven repeated.
Kyra opened and closed her mouth like a gaping fish. “Since when?”
Althea slid from the couch onto the floor next to the two girls. “That’s connected to my secret.”
Kyra faced Althea.
“I’m a necromancer and I brought Raven back from the dead.”
Kyra’s eyes widened, unable to make sense of what she heard.
Nekros raised two fingers into the air. “She also brought me back from the dead.”
Kyra stared incredulously at the trio. Raven explained how she was involved in a car accident when she was eight years old and how Althea brought her back. “Being on the other side of the veil and being forced back into the world of the living, something…no. A part of me was left behind and that’s why I can see ghosts.”
Kyra glanced at Nekros. “Do you see ghosts too?”
Nekros shook his head no. “I’ve been to the other side more than Raven and brought back to life more times as well. My ability, if that’s what you want to call it, is I heal faster than normal.”
“Like Wolverine and Deadpool?”
Nekros laughed. “I wish it was that cool. No, think of it like the ice bath in the movie Wanted. If I cut my finger it heals in a couple of days instead of a week.”
“You’ve been to the other side more times than Raven?” Kyra furrowed her brow. “Which means you’ve died more times than her.”
At Kyra’s observation, Althea and Nekros blushed but kept their lips tight as to what caused Nekros to die so many times.
A half-hearted smile crept on Kyra’s face. Now she knew why Raven, Althea, and Nekros were so close. And for the first time, she felt included in their ‘inside joke’.
“So, you know about the dead hottie that lives with you,” Raven teased Kyra.
Kyra’s face warmed at the mention of Rae. Raven smirked and rubbed her elbow into Kyra’s ribs. “Ah. Between ghost boy and walking red flag dick, who’s the better lay?”
Kyra’s blush deepened and her eyes widened at the idea of sex with Rae. Raven’s joking smile faded at Kyra’s reaction. “Oh, you’re in love with the ghost boy.”
Kyra’s gaze returned to the rug. Her blush reached her ears. “Maybe.”
“Have you actually fucked—”
“Shut up!” Kyra shouted as she buried her face in her hands, embarrassed at Raven’s deadpan question.
Nekros leaned back against the couch and stared at the ceiling in thought. “Can you even have sex with a ghost? I mean…how would that work?”
