Chapter 7
Kyra mingled with the guests of her housewarming party. The guest list mostly consisted of Raven, Althea, Nekros, Chaz, Adelina and her husband Lux, and Rae, the ever-present ghost.
“Hi Althea, I’m Kyra. Nice to meet you,” Kyra greeted and shook Althea’s hand.
“Nice to meet you too. This is my boyfriend, Nekros,” Althea disclosed.
Kyra greeted Nekros. As she looked at the trio, she noticed something. The energy around them was different in a way that the three of them were in on an inside joke. A small pang hit Kyra’s heart. She wanted that type of friendship, but with her abilities, it didn’t seem possible. She excused herself and checked on her other guests.
Kyra spotted Rae near the bay window, far enough away from the partygoers, but close enough to watch everyone like a hawk. The counter was covered with a wide variety of foods. It ranged from sandwiches, chips, cookies, and cupcakes. Chaz held a cupcake when Kyra approached him.
“Hi, Kitten,” he greeted.
Kyra’s skin crawled again at the nickname Chaz used for her. She ignored it though. “Hi. Are you enjoying the party?” she asked.
“Yeah. Thanks for inviting me.”
Kyra felt daggers being sent in her direction. She peered out of the corner of her eye to see who would be glaring daggers at her. Two individuals were glaring in her direction, Rae and Raven. Did I piss them off or something? Or are they glaring at Chaz and I happen to be in the same area as him? Kyra excused herself from the conversation with Chaz before she bounded in Raven’s direction.
“Are you glaring daggers at me?” she questioned once she reached Raven.
“Not you specifically. I just really don’t trust that guy. Something about him rubs me the wrong way.”
“You and me both,” Rae chimed in.
Kyra rolled her eyes at both Rae and Raven.
The guests had all started to disperse a little after midnight. The only ones that remained in the apartment were Chaz, Kyra, and Rae. Chaz offered to help clean up the mess. Kyra agreed. Chaz carried around a black trash bag and followed closely behind Kyra. When she grabbed a few empty solo cups, Chaz cleared his throat.
“Can I take you out to dinner sometime?” he asked.
The question startled Kyra. “What?”
“Can I take you out to dinner sometime?” Chaz repeated.
“As friends or…” she trailed off.
“I like you, Kyra. So, me taking you out to dinner would be a date.”
“Say thanks but no,” Rae voiced.
Kyra ignored Rae’s statement. “I’m still settling in. I don’t think I’m ready to start dating.”
Rae smiled smugly at Chaz. “Take that dick!”
Chaz nodded. “I understand. My offer still stands for whenever you are ready. I’d like to get to know you better and hopefully, it turns into something more.”
Rae pretended to gag on Chaz’s words. As much as Kyra wanted to glare at Rae, she had to keep up her act of not being a medium.
“I’ll take you up on that offer when I am ready.”
Rae gaped at Kyra’s response. “You’re actually going to date this asshole? Even Raven, your best friend, thinks he’s sketchy!”
Chaz smiled and continued helping Kyra clean up the apartment. Rae sulked at the bay window.
“I’ll take this to the dumpster before I head to my place,” Chaz proposed.
“I don’t mind taking it myself,” Kyra protested.
“It’s fine. With how late it is, it isn’t safe for a lady outside.”
Kyra caved and let Chaz take the trash out. He paused at the door on his way out.
“Thank you again for inviting me. I also look forward to the day that I can take you out on that date, Kitten.”
A dark shiver went down Kyra’s spine at the nickname. “Thank you for coming and for taking the trash out for me,” Kyra voiced as she pointed to the trash bag in his hands.
The gleam in Chaz’s eyes indicated he hoped that Kyra would kiss him. Instead, she patted him on the shoulder and said goodnight. When Chaz moved out of the doorway, Kyra closed and locked the door. She pressed her back against the door and slumped down. The cold metal felt nice through her long-sleeved shirt and slightly flushed skin.
“Despite you agreeing to potentially date him, I’m glad you didn’t kiss that jerk goodnight,” Rae said.
Kyra sighed. A heavyweight weighed down her shoulders; her secret, Chaz’s wanting a date, Raven’s bad vibes concerning Chaz, Rae’s concerns about Chaz, and the last two weights scared her to death. The feeling she got when Chaz called her ‘kitten’ and the feelings she started to develop for Rae.
