Chapter 6

Ka-FAE was a small coffee shop on the corner of Regina and Desert Wind Road. The owner was Adelina Schade. Adelina was a fair-skinned petite German woman with long wavy blonde hair, that was always braided and tossed over one shoulder, with messy bangs that framed her face. Her lime-green eyes complimented her blonde hair.

Kyra entered the coffee shop and greeted her boss. “Morning, Adelina.”

Adelina greeted back and handed Kyra an apron. Raven emerged from the bathroom.

            “Morning K!”

“Hi, Raven. How’s it been?”

Raven swayed her head from side to side. “So-so. It’s not too busy, but it’s not slow either.”

“Girls! Today starts the fall and Halloween menu. Don’t forget to inform our customers,” Adelina voiced. She turned to Raven. “Raven can you please hang the new menu.”

Raven nodded and headed to the back room. Kyra stepped behind the counter. She clocked in on the machine and began counting down her till. Once her opening till was counted Kyra began wiping down counters and tables. Raven reemerged from the back room with the fall menu sign. She unhooked the original that hung above the counter and replaced it with the new menu.

The door chimed letting the staff know that a customer entered the building.

“We’ll be with you in one moment,” Kyra called from the counter. She finished making a pumpkin spice latte for a customer. Raven was taking orders at the drive-thru window.

“Don’t worry, take your time,” the customer responded.

Kyra recognized the voice. She couldn’t put her finger on it at the moment. “Rosa!” Kyra called out to the owner of the pumpkin spice latte. A goth girl with extremely pale skin came to the counter and grabbed her drink. “Have a great day!” Kyra said before she moved to the side of the counter with the cash register. As soon as she got there, she recognized the customer.

“Hey Kyra, right? I didn’t know you worked here,” Chaz stated.

“Yup. This is where I work. I didn’t know you were a regular.”

“I come in here a few times. Especially when my coffee machine at home breaks down.”

“What can I get started for you,” Kyra asked.

“Since the fall menu is available can I get a Frankenstein Frappe with extra coffee beans please,” Chaz requested.

            “Blended or iced?”

“Blended please.”

Kyra typed the order up. “That’ll be five dollars even.”

Chaz paid with his card and Kyra went to the other side of the counter and began creating his drink. Raven strolled over to where Kyra was, the window was empty.

            “Who is that?” Raven whispered.

“That’s my neighbor, Chaz,” Kyra replied as she added the extra coffee beans to the blender. Raven peered around Kyra. After sizing up Chaz, Raven moved herself so she was hidden behind Kyra.

“I don’t like him. Something about him is off.”

“He’s not that bad. I mean he’s the only one that helped me after I moved in,” Kyra defended.

Raven scrunched up her nose. “If you trust him, I’ll give him a benefit of a doubt.”

A car arrived at the drive-thru window and Raven skipped to the window. As much as Kyra loved Raven, sometimes she hated how no-filter Raven was. She poured the mixture into a clear cup added whipped cream and drizzled a little bit of chocolate syrup on top. She placed a lid on top of the cup and handed it to Chaz who waited near the counter.

            “Here you go.”

Chaz thanked her for the drink and slipped her a twenty-dollar bill as a tip. He winked at her. He turned on his heels, but Kyra stopped him.

“Hey, I’m having a party at my apartment this weekend. I’d like it if you would come,” Kyra babbled.

Chaz chuckled. “I’ll see what I can do, kitten.”

Something about how he said ‘kitten’ made her skin crawl, but Kyra squashed the feeling down. She smiled and waved bye as she watched Chaz leave.

“Did he seriously call you kitten?”

Kyra jumped as Raven magically appeared beside her. “Geez you scared me.”

“As I said, I don’t like him. The way he said ‘kitten’ just made my stomach churn. Ick,” Raven cringed.

Kyra shook her head and brushed off Raven’s words.             Kyra opened the front door of her apartment and tiredly entered her home. From the corner of her eye, she spotted Rae in the center of the living room. Was he smiling? What, did he miss her that much or something? Seeing his smile at just her presence being home made her smile too. Fuck! I can’t be having feelings for a ghost. What the fuck is wrong with me? She quickly replaced the smile on her face with a content sigh of just being happy to be home. She kicked off her shoes by the door. A tiny lightbulb lit up above her head, she was wearing socks and the lacquered hardwood made up most of the apartment. She ran into the hallway and slid into her bedroom. A childish smile graced her lips. Partly because of her actions and partly because of Rae laughing and smiling at her.
