Chapter 6

The trio sat on the couch. Raven’s outburst had finally subsided and she listened intently as Althea explained what had happened between her and Nekros. Nekros wanted to ask if it was a good idea to tell Raven about Althea being a necromancer.

Raven looked at Nekros but was talking to Althea. “So, we have a new member to the club.”

“Club?” Nekros asked confused.

“It’s not a club. It’s…I don’t even know what to call it,” Althea sighed.

“She brought you back to life too?” Nekros questioned.

Raven nodded. “I was the first person Althea brought back. In fact, it was because of me that she found out that she was a necromancer.”

Nekros faced Althea. He wanted to hear her side of the story. “Can I ask what happened?”

Althea took a deep breath before she answered. “We were eight and Raven got into a car accident. Much like you, my instinct kicked in and that’s all.”

Nekros knew there was more to the story, but noticed how uncomfortable Althea was talking about it. He bit the inside of his cheek. He’d wait until she was ready to tell him the whole story.

“How many people…” Nekros began but was cut off by Raven.

“How many people did Althea use her necromancer powers on? Three total. I was the first and you are the latest.”

            “Who’s the third?”

“Nobody. They’re gone and we don’t need to talk about it,” Althea blustered.

Nekros could hear the pain in Althea’s voice despite her play at being tough and it made his heart ache. Whomever she used her powers on deeply affected her. Again, he wanted to know more. More about this third person she revived. More about her and Raven, but most of all Nekros wanted to know more about Althea, in general.

“How many people know you’re a necromancer?”

Althea bit her lip. Raven was about to answer the question, but Althea spoke up. “The three of you I brought back and my mom.”

“Is your mom a necromancer too?”

Althea shook her head. “No, but it was passed down on her side of the family.”

“Maternally, Althea is a descendant of Clotho,” Raven chimed in.

“Is that…”

“Yes, that’s why I’m majoring in Greek Mythology.”

Nekros gently held Althea’s hand. He smiled softly at her. He moved his mouth to speak but stopped. He didn’t know what to say, so he opted to just sit with Althea and Raven in silence.

“Nekros, I do have to ask for a favor,” Althea mumbled.

“Your secret is safe with me. You don’t have to worry about that,” Nekros expressed.

Althea smiled.

“Since we’re a trio now, what is the plan for Halloween?” Raven chimed in, changing the subject and lightening the mood.

            Nekros and Althea laughed.
