Chapter 5

Rae

Rae watched as Kyra walked around the apartment. Her wavy brown hair was pulled into a ponytail. If it wasn’t for the nametag pinned to her shirt, he never would have known she was heading to work. Once she had everything, she had left leaving Rae alone.

What felt like hours passing was only minutes. It may have only been three days since Kyra moved in, but her absence deeply affected Rae. He groaned into the silence and decided to snoop. The first thing he scanned was the scattered CDS on the coffee table. Rae’s face twisted with disgust as he saw the numerous boy band CDS. Most of them consisted of Backstreet Boys and NSYNC.

Does she seriously like this stuff? I bet her favorite song is Heartbeat by Stereo Skyline.

He then browsed her movies. He pretended to gag at the plethora of romantic comedies.

She’s such a typical girl.

He soon ate his words when he saw a more variety of movies tucked away in the entertainment center. The only thing that shocked him was the collection of anime television series.

I never would have pegged her to be a weeb.

He then moved to the kitchen to view Kyra’s taste in alcohol. Surprisingly, she didn’t have any. This meant that she either lived the straight-edge lifestyle or she didn’t have time to go alcohol shopping. Her taste in food was rather typical for average people and didn’t pique his interest. His next stop was the bathroom. Her shampoo and conditioner were rice water bars, he only knew this because he read it on the box. This was vastly different than typical girls who had various bottles of shampoo and conditioner for numerous conditions. As he was about to leave the bathroom, he spotted a small pink object hidden behind a large bottle of body wash. He retraced his steps until he was in front of the body wash. He levitated and contorted his body so he was able to fully see the hidden object. One end looked like a rose and the other end was egg-shaped. He stared for a while before he finally realized what it was. A small blush crept over his face. It was a Lovehoney Rose Glow sex toy.

Does she use that on a regular basis? Or was it a recent purchase?

Rae’s eyes widened in shock as his brain registered the thought. He slapped himself.

What the fuck dude! You have no right to comment on this shit! You are not her boyfriend! Her sex preference is none of your damn business.

He turned on his heel and left the bathroom.

The rest of the time he spent moping around the apartment. For the first time in his ghost existence, he hated the silence…and the loneliness. This limbo had begun to drive him crazy. He yelled into the void of the empty apartment. He walked to the front door and stared at the handle. He reached his hand out and tried touching the shiny metal. His hand fazed through. He gritted his teeth.

Fine. If I can’t touch the damn thing. Maybe I can faze through it.

Rae leaned forward his head disappeared into the door. Instead of seeing the hallway that would lead to Chaz’s apartment. All Rae saw was darkness. A sickening feeling washed over him.

Is this the abyss that all those famous quotes talked about? Stare into the abyss and it’ll stare back into you.

He pulled his head back in. He bit the inside of his cheek.

                        Fuck.

He was bound to the apartment. Unable to leave this stagnant limbo. A lightbulb went off above his head. He started wandering all over the apartment looking for an unusual door that didn’t quite belong.

He remembered something he saw on a TV show about ghosts. In the show, the ghost wasn’t able to leave their house but found a door that led to the afterlife. So that’s what Rae was going to do. Now he just needed to find the damn door. After checking the entire apartment twice for a floating door, but no such luck. He cursed under his breath.

No sooner than he cursed the front door opened to reveal Kyra. She had finally gotten off work and returned home. Just the sight of her brought a smile to Rae’s face. He swore that if he had a beating heart it would have flipped when he saw her.
