Chapter 5
Despite Nekros’s statement of being turned on by his near-death experience Althea changed into pajamas. Nekros had offered to drive home, but with how late it was Althea insisted that he stay the night. She had a pair of sweatpants that would fit him so he wasn’t stuck sleeping in his clothes.
Nekros exited the bathroom wearing the sweatpants. He entered the living room and caught sight of Althea in an oversized nightgown. He noticed a slight blush on Althea’s face when she noticed that he was shirtless.
“I’m sorry I don’t have a shirt for you to wear,” she murmured.
“I’m okay. I can still drive home if you prefer.”
“No!” Althea bit her lip at her outburst. “I mean. I offered you to come to my place where we could…and the mood was ruined because I…it’s the least I can do is have you stay the night,” she said.
Nekros smiled at Althea’s adorable behavior. “If you insist.”
Althea walked to the hall closet and pulled out an extra comforter and pillow. She then carried it all to the couch. She started to make a makeshift bed, but Nekros stopped her and took over.
“Are you heading to bed now?” Nekros asked. Althea didn’t answer. Nekros continued. “I’m not tired yet. We could finish the movie first and then head to bed.”
Althea pondered for a moment and then nodded in agreement. Nekros sat down on the couch and Althea sat next to him. He then covered them with the blanket. Nekros wrapped his arms around Althea and she lay her head on his shoulder. When the credits rolled on the screen both Nekros and Althea had fallen asleep.
The next morning Nekros had woken up first. At first, he panicked at his surroundings, but when he looked down in his arms, he saw Althea and remembered the events that had happened. He smiled softly. Part of him wanted to head home, but his mom had raised him better than leaving a host’s house before they were awake. Instead, he maneuvered around Althea and got up from the couch. He walked to the couch and pursued her cabinets and fridge. As a kind gesture, he decided to make Althea breakfast.
He grabbed a few slices of bread, milk, eggs, mint extract, and sugar. He plugs in the gorge foreman grill and waits for it to warm up. In a small bowl, he mixed the milk eggs, sugar, and mint extract. He dipped the bread slices into the liquid mixture and then placed them on the grill. He quietly whistles a song as he cooks.
From the living room, he hears the rustling of the blanket and a half-quiet grumble. He peeks over the counter in the kitchen that faces the living room and sees Althea sit up and rub her head. The moment her nose turned up Nekros guessed that was when she smelled his cooking. Althea groggily walked to the kitchen.
“Morning,” he greets. Althea nods before sitting at the bar.
“What are you making?”
“French toast. I switched out the vanilla extract for mint. Hope you don’t mind.”
Althea shook her head hinting that she didn’t mind.
Nekros continued cooking. After cooking eight slices he turned off the grill, placed four slices on a plate, and passed it over to Althea. Althea buttered her slices and drowned them in syrup. Nekros stabbed a piece of his breakfast and was about to shove the mouthful into his mouth, but was interrupted by a knock at the door.
He looked at Althea with a puzzled face. Althea was unfazed.
“Come in Raven.”
The door clicked as it was being unlocked. Raven entered and closed the door behind her.
“So how did the hook-up go?” Raven teased. When she entered the kitchen, she faltered seeing Nekros was still there. Nekros waved hesitantly.
Raven stood gapping like a fish before she finally formed words. “Hi.”
“Morning. I made breakfast, would you like some?” Nekros offered unable to think of anything else to do.
“We didn’t sleep together,” Althea blurted out before she shoved a mouthful of food in her mouth.
Nekros stared at her. This was a drastic change in her behavior.
“What happened?” Raven asked as she sat next to Althea. The duo acted like Nekros wasn’t there.
“I killed him.”
Raven fell off the bar stool, shocked. She climbed back onto the stool. “What?”
“I killed him.”
Raven fell off the bar stool again, this time from laughing so hard.
