Chapter 4

The next day Kyra unpacked boxes and organized her new home. Rae stood off to the side and watched. He would sometimes let out a chuckle as Kyra manhandled the heavier items because she refused to ask anyone for help. Kyra had successfully arranged the kitchen when there was a knock on the door. She grabbed her pocket knife and placed it in the pocket of her ripped skinny jeans before peeking out her apartment’s front door.

            “Hello?”

“Hi, you’re the new tenant in 22A?” the gentleman on the other side of the door greeted.

            “Yes, I’m Kyra.”

“Hi Kyra, I’m Chaz. I live in 22B.”

Rae froze. The name and voice of Chaz sent shivers down his spine and set his teeth on edge.

“Nice to meet you, Chaz,” Kyra greeted back.

“Um, I just wanted to say that if you need help moving anything or in general, I’m here to help.”

Kyra felt her insides turn into knots. Something told her that he wouldn’t leave willingly until he helped her. Kyra opened the door to the apartment.

“I could actually use help moving some of the heavy stuff.

            “Fucking seriously!” Rae snapped.

Chaz entered the apartment. He was dressed in a black and white blazer with matching black slacks. If Kyra didn’t know any better, she’d say he was part of the mafia. His black hair was styled in such a way that Kyra couldn’t tell if it was a pompadour, spiky mohawk, or both.

Kyra glanced subtly at Rae to see him stare at Chaz. It reminded her of a cat with its back raised ready to strike at the first attempt to touch it.

“What can I help with?” Chaz asked.

Kyra moved to stand in front of the heavy furniture. “Well, I need to move this dresser to the bedroom and a few other things…” Chaz walked to the opposite side of the dresser and grabbed it. Kyra mimicked his action and the duo carried it to the bedroom.

Once all the heavy furniture was moved Kyra wiped the sweat off her forehead. “I would offer you something to eat or drink, but I haven’t had time to go grocery shopping yet.”

Chaz waved at her comment. “Don’t worry about it. I’m just happy to help.”

            “Thanks.”

“Maybe we could eat dinner together sometime. You know, to get to know each other,” Chaz offered. His eyes scanned the room as if he was looking for something.

Rae growled. Something about Chaz rubbed him the wrong way.

“Maybe. I’ll keep in touch about that dinner,” Kyra said. She opened the door hinting to Chaz that it was time to go. Chaz headed for the door giving up on whatever he was trying to find.

“It was my pleasure to meet you, Kyra,” Chaz drawled as he grabbed Kyra’s hand and kissed it.

“It was nice meeting you too. Thanks for the help.”

With that said Chaz left and Kyra closed the door. She wiped the kiss off on her pants. This caused Rae to smile.

“Good riddance to bad rubbish. You may as well wash your hands. You don’t know what diseases he may be carrying.”

Kyra ignored Rae’s comment but did wash her hands in the kitchen sink. When her hands were clean, Kyra went back to arranging her home. While Chaz creeped her out, she had to admit that with his help she had little work to do.

Kyra browsed the aisles of the store. A girl with raven black hair and purple highlights followed close behind with a cart half full of groceries.

“Thanks for helping me go grocery shopping Raven,” Kyra said as she picked up a jar of peanut butter.

            “No problem, K,” Raven responded.

Kyra smiled at the nickname. “October 1st I’m having a house welcoming party.”

            “Oh?”

Kyra and Raven moved down the aisle. “Yeah. Depending on my work schedule I may even have a Halloween party at the apartment,” Kyra said as she grabbed a few boxes of tea.

“Two parties in October at Casa K, huh?” Raven sang.

Kyra laughed. “Yup. Might as well get my last two parties in a year done in October.”

Raven’s smile faded a little. “I know the last two months are hard for you…I’m here if you need anything. Okay.”

Kyra faked a smile. “I’ll be fine. If anything happens that I can’t handle, I’ll call.”

Raven helped Kyra carry all the groceries into the apartment. When every last bag was placed in the kitchen Raven hugged Kyra.

“Can I bring two friends to your house party?” Raven asked.

“Sure. Who are you planning on bringing?”

            “You remember Althea?”

Kyra thought for a moment. “The Hawaiian girl that is majoring in Greek Mythology?”

“That’s the one! I’m bringing her and her boyfriend, Nekros.”

Kyra had only met Althea in passing. She wanted to be friends with her, but Althea seemed standoffish like she had a secret that weighed on her and she kept her distance. Like Kyra was one to talk. She was a medium that pretended her abilities didn’t exist. However, it was this secret that Kyra had and Althea’s energy that encouraged Kyra to want to pursue a friendship in the first place.

“I’d like to get to know Althea,” Kyra voiced as she began putting the cold items in the fridge. Rae sat at the bay window watching the two girls.

“Are you going to invite anyone else?” Raven asked.

“Probably my neighbor, Chaz. He lives in the apartment across from me.” At this statement, Rae stood up. His hands formed fists at his sides.

            “Seriously! What the fuck!”

“Out of all my neighbors, he’s the only one that introduced himself. Plus, it’s the polite thing to do,” Kyra reasoned. Despite responding to Rae’s outburst, Kyra only voiced the last part to defend her inviting a stranger to Raven.

Raven nodded in agreement. “Makes sense.” Raven assisted in putting cold items into the fridge. When all the refrigerated groceries were dealt with Raven gave Kyra another hug.

“I need to head home. I’ll see you at work tomorrow.”

Kyra hugged Raven back. “Thanks for giving me a ride to the store. I really needed to stock up on food.”

“No problem. Text or call me if you need anything,” Raven said as she walked towards the front door. Kyra opened and held the door open.

“Will do.” After Raven left Kyra closed the door and continued putting away her groceries.

“It’s the polite thing to invite Chaz. Really? Did you not get creepy stalker vibes? Or even a hint of asshole energy off the guy?” Rae growled. Rae was standing in the kitchen with Kyra. Kyra did her best to drown out Rae’s voice. I’ve only lived in this apartment for two days now and I’m having a hard time ignoring Rae’s presence. I literally slipped up three times now showing that I can hear him. Either he’s stupid and didn’t notice or he’s placating me and not acknowledging the mess-ups. This is getting really fucking hard.
