Chapter 2

Rae

Rae sat on the couch, or rather whatever a ghost could do that was the equivalent to sitting. The front door to his apartment opened to reveal a woman. She was somewhere around the five-foot-two area. Brown wavy curls framed her face and stopped at the top of her breasts. The gray sweater dress clung to her curves.

“Who the hell are you?” Rae asked.

The woman didn’t respond. Not surprising. Since his death, Rae had discovered that normal people couldn’t see let alone hear ghosts. Rae moved to the front door where he leaned against it. He stared at the woman. Something told him that she wasn’t ‘normal’. He had a suspicion that she could not only hear him but see him as well. The entire time, she never looked in his direction.

As if on cue the woman’s phone rang and she answered it. “Hello this is Kyra,” the woman answered.

Rae walked to the kitchen. Half paying attention to Kyra’s conversation.

“The previous tenant died? Is that why the apartment was so cheap?” Kyra asked.

Rae paused mid-stride and laughed dryly. “So, Bishop found someone to rent my apartment. That was fast. Didn’t bother waiting for the case of my death to be solved. Dick.”

“Absolutely. It’s not like the apartment is haunted or anything,” Kyra responded into the phone.

Rae laughed at her response. “Of course, it’s haunted. I’m still here!”

Rae attempted to open the fridge but fazed through. Damn it. He could really use a drink right now but being a ghost…

Rae leaned against the bay window in the living room and watched as the movers hauled all of Kyra’s belongings inside. They were just shoving everything into open areas until it looked like an episode of Hoarders.

“Thanks, guys! I can organize it from here,” Kyra said. The movers grunted and left the apartment. Kyra stood in the middle of the mess. Her hands on her hips.

“Wondering where you should start?” Rae asked. “Here’s an idea, ask the movers to come back and leave!”

Kyra spun on her heel and for a moment Rae believed she actually heard him. Instead, she walked to the bedroom and started putting the bed together.

Rae grunted. “If you’re going to stay you can at least ask for help putting your bed together.”

Kyra sat on the floor cross-legged joining the black poles together. Rae sighed and sat down next to her. The two sat in silence with Rae chiming in every once in a while, that certain pieces didn’t fit, despite knowing that Kyra couldn’t hear him. After a while, Kyra’s four-poster bed was assembled and placed where she wanted it. Kyra smiled at her job well done which caused Rae to smile too.“You’re such a dope…but I guess if I have to share my home with someone, I’d rather it be you.” Rae said.
