Chapter 2

“I always knew he was a douchebag,” Raven fumed.

Althea shoved another spoonful of mint ice cream into her mouth. Her body slumped forward as if attempting to curl up on itself. Althea had planned to stay in bed all day and wallow, but when Raven heard what happened, dragged Althea outside.

“I say we take a page out of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s book. We stake him to an anthill and throw little pickles at him,” Raven suggested.

Althea raised an eyebrow at her best friend. “What?”

Raven rubbed her temple and leaned back into her chair. “On second thought, if we stake him, we may get in trouble with the police for animal cruelty. However, we can just bury him up to his neck in an anthill.”

Althea stifled a laugh. This was the first time she laughed since the incident. “Regular ants or are we talking fire ants?”

“Definitely fire ants. More pain that way.”

Althea laughed to the point she nearly choked on her ice cream. Raven smiled.

“Thanks Raven. I really needed this.”

Raven saluted Althea. “No problem. But seriously, the best way to get back at him is to enjoy your life. Even if you are hurting go out and do things. Hell, have sex with a random guy!”

Again, Althea choked on her ice cream.

“It doesn’t have to be serious. Just…something that makes you feel sexy,” Raven continued.

“I’ll think about it,” Althea said after she coated her throat with water.

“At least come to the bar Liquid tonight with me.”

Althea stared at her half-eaten ice cream. She sighed and agreed.

Althea finished her paper on the Fates for Professor Echo. In Greek mythology, Echo was a nymph that was cursed to repeat the last words of another. It made sense that with a name like Echo, he’d become a Professor of Greek Mythology.

She walked to her closet to find something to wear to the bar with Raven. As she stared at all her clothes, she felt overwhelmed. A knock at the door grabbed her attention.

Althea opened the front door and saw Raven. Relieved, Althea pulled Raven into a hug. “Oh, thank goodness you’re here.”

“Let me guess you almost had a panic attack over what to wear to the club,” Raven teased.

Althea clung to Raven with big anime eyes complete with tears brimming the corners. Raven shook her head and laughed. “All right. I’ll pick out your outfit,” Raven said as the duo walked to the closet.

After much deliberation, Raven decided on an off-the-shoulder witchy vibe shirt with purple ombre skinny jeans. This was a stark contrast to Raven’s pink ombre mini dress.

At the bar, Althea nursed her Mojito. Raven, on the other hand, was on her seventh Mai Tai. Across the bar, a group of boys were sitting at a table. One of them had messy black hair and baby-blue eyes. He glanced at Althea every few minutes.

“What’s got your attention, Nekros,” asked Nick, the only blonde in the group.

“Nothing,” Nekros stuttered hoping that his answer would satisfy his friends.

Blaze, a gentleman with bright red hair followed Nekros’ gaze. “Oh, he’s checking out the two girls at the bar!”

The rest of the group turned their heads to look at the bar. They catch sight of Althea and Raven.

“They’re cute. I like the one with the raven black hair with purple highlights,” Nick voiced.

Blaze punched Nick in the shoulder. “Of course, you’d say that!”

“I know both of those girls. They go to the same college as me,” Nekros said. Before his friends said anything else he headed to the bar.

“Hey, Althea, right?” Nekros asked once he reached the bar.

Althea looked up from her drink. This was the first time Nekros noticed that Althea had honey-brown eyes and her hair was a wavy chocolate brown.

“Yes?”

“Hi, I’m Nekros. We go to the same college,” Nekros greeted.

“Oh really? I don’t think I’ve seen you around,” Althea mused.

“Can I?” Nekros asked as he pointed to the empty seat next to Althea.

Althea nodded her head. “Go ahead.”

Nekros sat down and asked the bartender for water.

“We share a few classes. I actually sit in front of Professor Echo’s lecture.”

The two conversed about Greek Mythology and Professor Echo’s teaching methods. The conversation got more personal.

“This Jeff sounds like a jerk,” Nekros observed.

“That’s what I said!” Raven chimed in.

From the corner of his eye, Nekros saw that Blaze waved to get his attention. “Excuse me. I’ll be back in a moment.” He got up from his seat and walked over to his friends.

Raven nudged Althea in the ribs. “He’s cute. Maybe you two should hook up!”

Althea blushed at her friend’s blatancy. “I don’t know.”

“I’m not trying to pressure you. But I think you could use this. Ultimately, it’s up to you.”

Althea stared at Nekros’ back. His light blue hoodie with a white skull and crossbones design stood out against all the dark colors of the bargoers. She bit her lip. Raven’s advice was resounding in her head and urged her to do something out of character for her.

“Hey, sorry about that,” Nekros said as he sat down.

            “Is everything okay?” Raven questioned.

“Yeah. They were just letting me know that they were heading out.”

“Do you need to go with them?” Althea asked.

Nekros laughed. “No, I have my own ride.”

            “Oh okay. I was wondering…”

“What’s up?”

“Do you…maybe…want to come over to my place?” Althea mumbled embarrassed.

Nekros’ eyes widened at the question. He saw the blush that crept over Althea’s face. He didn’t want to embarrass her more than she already was.

“We could watch movies or something. Nothing like that! Unless…you want to…,” Althea fretted shaking her hands.

Nekros smiled at Althea’s actions and thought she was adorable. “Sure. If that’s what you want to do.” Nekros got up from his seat and offered his hand to help Althea out of hers. Raven flashed a smile and a double thumbs up to Althea before the couple left the bar.
